THIS POSTING IS FOR LOCAL LAW STUDENTS ONLY. YOU MUST BE A LAW STUDENT IN THE GREATER HOUSTON AREA TO APPLY FOR THIS OPENING. General Summary The General Litigation Bureau has one paid Intern who works to support the attorneys in the Division by helping to run the Fugitive Extradition Docket. Duties and Responsibilities Communicate out-of-state fugitive rules and procedures to defense counsel and out-of-state agencies. Work effectively in a fast-paced, accuracy-sensitive environment. Manage cases involving out-of-state fugitives and extradition matters under the supervision of a senior attorney. Facilitate the extradition process for individuals detained on out-of-state warrants to ensure the timely resolution of legal matters. Monitor and update the fugitive docket daily while reviewing charging instruments, warrants, and other case-related documents. Attend court proceedings and coordinate docket resets to maintain case flow and ensure compliance with legal timelines. Communicate regularly with defense counsel, local law enforcement, and out-of-state agencies to streamline case progression. Draft and process case-specific court motions and orders, and conduct legal research to support filings. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Must have the ability to listen and follow basic instructions, and great attention to detail. Excellent communication skills are necessary to communicate with and interact with the defense bar, judges, and law enforcement agencies. Must have the ability to keep a neat and tidy workspace and to organize files and documents. Must have familiarity with and proficiency in computer skills such as email, word processing, scanning, etc. Required Education/Experience Interns are expected to be enrolled and actively taking classes in an accredited law school. Two years of law school experience is required, meaning that only third-year law students (3Ls) will be considered for the position. The applicant must be bar card eligible prior to starting work. Compensation and Work Hours This is not a summer position. This internship generally lasts for one year (end of 2L year through end of 3L year) with breaks for finals. Paid interns are paid a salary of $20.00 per hour for up to 25 hours per week. HCDAO ask that paid interns have the ability to commit to at least 20 hours per week. All work is done in office as there are no work from home opportunities available for interns.
