Responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY

Directs the operations of the BVSJ/GSJ Clinical Laboratory including hiring and supervision of laboratory personnel, development and documentation of processes to show compliance with CLIA, CAP and JCAHO standards, maintaining and executing the Laboratory Quality Management System, and formulating goals to produce quality lab results and outcomes that achieve strategic goals. Fully engaged in the implementation of initiatives focused on enhanced performance, workflow redesign, and developing a culture that emphasizes excellence in the quality and delivery of laboratory services.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

ESSENTIAL

Manage the selection, orientation, training, and assignments of laboratory staff to provide adequate coverage for patient care.

Manage human resources including standards of performance, personal development, positive employee relations, team work, performance appraisals, and competencies to improve lab staff to a desired level of performance.

Develop, maintain, and make available to lab policies and procedures to operate the laboratory.

Ensure compliance in all laboratory processes to meet JCAHO, CAP and CLIA regulatory standards and hospital guidelines.

Validate test procedures to ensure accuracy, precision, reportable ranges, reference ranges, and staff competency.

Manager CAP and CLIA approved proficiency testing program to ensure quality laboratory testing and maintain CLIA certificate of compliance.

Direct and manage a quality control program appropriate for the testing performed to prove acceptable levels of analytic performance throughout the entire testing process.

Manage the BVSJ/GSJ Quality ManagemDent System essentials (Organization, Personnel, Equipment, Purchasing/Inventory, Process Control, Documents/Records, Information Management, Occurrence Management, Assessment, Process Improvement, Service and Satisfaction, Facilities and Safety) to ensure quality diagnostic data for patient care throughout the laboratory pre-analytical, analytical, post-analytical, and information management path of workflow.

Develop and recommend department operating budget to ensure that the department operates within allocated funds. Maintain operations within budgetary limits.

Resolve technical problems through remedial actions whenever test systems deviate from established performance specifications to ensure proper test system function.

Coordinate selection and purchase the appropriate lab equipment and supplies to produce quality test results in a cost effective manner.

Communicate departmental and organizational information to lab staff in a timely manner to inform the lab staff about organizational and departmental processes.

Manage compliance with safety policies to ensure staff and patient safety.

Technical Skills and Knowledge - Provides technical supervision to multiple departmental sections to ensure that all sections can operate correctly and efficiently. Evaluates and implements new or revised test procedures. Uses information systems (LIS), and network (LAN) effectively.

Follow the hospital's mission, vision, and values to treat all people with dignity, ensure confidentiality of customer information, foster working relationships with customers, and be a good steward of allotted resources.

Direct laboratory processes to function efficiently with other hospital departments.

Participate in management meetings to communicate laboratory information and to receive relevant information from other departments and administration.

Performs all Medical Technologist duties as needed to provide patient care.

OTHER
