Salary Information Recruit: $57,200 / Police Officer: $62,000 Department Summary

Our 46 state certified police officers enforce municipal and state laws, and UNT policies, while providing service to campus 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

The department has full law enforcement jurisdiction within the UNT campus, city of Denton, and any county where UNT maintains property. We proudly serve these areas, taking time to get to know our community and partnering with them to provide a safe environment for their learning and professional development.

Officers earn additional pay for their highest obtained TCOLE certificate.

Basic $2,400 per year

Intermediate $4,800 per year

Advanced $7,200 per year

Master $9,600 per year

Minimum Qualifications

* High school diploma/GED equivalent
* Must be at least 20 years of age at time of application, as the State of Texas requires licensed peace officers to be 21 years of age at the completion of the police academy.
* The State of Texas requires all peace officers to be U.S. citizens.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

* Good moral character and ability to furnish acceptable character references.
* Understanding of and willingness to abide by the Police Officers Code of Ethics.
* Physical ability to perform Police Officer (Law Enforcement) duties.
* Ability and willingness to work long or irregular hours, on various and changing shifts, sometimes under severe emotional stress and inclement weather.
* Exercise good judgment and utilize tact and courtesy when working with the public under frequently stressful conditions.
* Ability to react quickly and effectively under emergency (high stress) situations.
* Demonstrate professional demeanor and superior oral communication skills.
* Ability to formulate effective solutions to problem situations in accordance with statutes, regulations, and training.
* Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in business, criminal justice, sociology, computer science or related field.

Bilingual English/Spanish.

Required License / Registration / Certification Work Schedule

Shift work which can include nights, weekends and holidays.

Job Duties

o

Provides high visibility patrol to the campus by vehicle, bike, and foot. Has an understanding of how to balance time during shift to achieve optimal results (i.e. doesn't focus on just one or two areas).

o

Accurately generates appropriate paperwork required from position. Routinely inspects & maintains any and all equipment issued to them.

o

Demonstrates initiative and encourages service and process improvements. Ensures compliance with policies, statutes, safety guidelines and procedures.

o

Demonstrates and encourages honesty, fairness, and ethical conduct. Delivers responsive, courteous and accurate delivery of service.

o

Has an understanding of peak work periods and demonstrates responsibility by regular attendance. Does not allow personal problems to interfere with job responsibilities and accepts responsibility for actions.

Regularly engages with the community to develop and foster positive public/police relationships. Understands that just because you can do something legally doesn't mean it's necessary (What you can do vs. what you should do).
